‘J&K power purchase, consumption surge 27% annually’ | KNO

Srinagar, Feb 05 (KNO): Amid power import dependency, Jammu and Kashmir in the past nine years has recorded a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of nearly 27 percent in power purchase and consumption. According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the government has said that “Per capita electricity consumption in Jammu & Kashmir recorded a CAGR of 2.15 percent during the last 9 years (from 1171 KWh to 1488 KWh). Total purchased and consumption units increased from 15225 million units to 20830 million units over the same period in line with rising demand.” The survey further revealed that till November-2025, transmission and distribution capacity of 34,839 MVA with electric line length of 1,76,601 Circuit Kilo-Meters (Ckm) has been established by the J&K Power Development Department (PDD). “Transmission and distribution capacity has increased by 44% during the last six years.” The government also said that at least 11.71 lakh smart meters have been installed so far against the target of about 21 lakhs. “On the recommendation of J&K Government, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, GoI, has accorded approval to a project for providing 200 free units of electricity to 2.21 lakh AAY families of Jammu and Kashmir under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna- Utility Led Aggregation (ULA) model. Implementation is going to start soon,” it reads. It also said that with the heading of more power projects (3014 MW), hydel power generation capacity is being doubled by 2028. The survey further revealed that under PM Surya Ghar Bijli, 7125 Government buildings have been solarized against a target of 22,494 and 16,799 households have been solarized against a target of 83,550. “These initiatives have contributed an additional 131 MW to the UTs renewable energy capacity.” “56 Mini Hydel Projects with an aggregate capacity of 147MW taken up under the IPP mode out of which 7 projects with a capacity of 35.25MW have been successfully commissioned,” it reads—(KNO)
